When it comes to making a meal come to life, there is nothing better than adding a little garnish to the plate. Presentation is an important part of the culinary arts. By presenting a plate that has garnish on it, you are saying that you are here to having the most fun and lavish meal possible. But using garnish the wrong way may cause some unneeded problems. Culinary school often spends a decent amount of time teaching its students to develop an understanding of garnish use and what’s appropriate for each dish. If you are using garnish on the meal, you may want to stick with these small rules.
Have Garnish That Compliments The Meal
There is nothing more jarring then seeing a plate of food that does not have the right garnish on it. Anyone with a love for the culinary arts soon develops an eye for this sort of faux pas. Presenting a pasta dish with an orange slice would be a very unwise decision, but you may not know this. Knowing that basil is the right type of garnish to use with an Italian meal may take a little time to get used to. This is why doing a little bit of research to find the best garnish for whatever meal you are cooking up is the right way to go in all instances. It is ultimately more important to cook the meal right than to have a good looking garnish, but if you are going to have one you should definitely try to make it the right type. This is a very big deal if you are going to go that route so do the research and you should be fine.
Present A Theme
Another great way to use a garnish is to present a theme for your culinary arts masterpiece. If you used a type of basil or thyme in the dish, you may want to keep some left over to put on the top as a type of decoration. This will show your guests that you have thought the meal through all the way so you can have the best dinner possible. The theme could reach through to having types of fruit with every part of the meal or having a through line of a certain color for the dinner. It is ultimately up to you and how you want the meal to come off for your guests. The garnish could be what keeps them coming back for more but it could also ruin the meal in certain circumstances. Just keep this in mind when you are cooking your next meal and you should be fine. It may actually make you curious about how you could improve your themed garnish ideas even further with a few classes in culinary school.
